Jack Daniel’s
Some time ago now my uncle sent me two photos he took while visiting Newcastle (see below). These show Jack Daniel’s reviving the hand painted advertising medium by using a stencil to replicate the label design on walls across the city. Comparing the two signs reveals that they are stencilled, most probably they did a […]

Colossal Media Live
This is a great short film made by the team at Colossal Media and gives a real insight into some of the techniques used to produce brickads in particular it includes footage of the ‘pouncebag’ method of transferring the outline design onto the wall. The campaign highlighted here is for Dewar’s and the work has that […]

Colossal Media Press
While looking again at the Colossal Media site I came across this really nice spread they got in the New York Times back in October 2006. I think they’re onto a great thing and the fact that big name clients such as Absolut, H&M and Stella Artois are buying in implies that others would agree.

Oli just got back from New York where he said that there are ghost signs everywhere. However, in addition to the old signs, they are still producing modern brickads over there. This one is for Jodie Foster’s new film which has just been released in the UK. You can see, towards the bottom of the […]

Ghost Signs Live (India?)
Painting Wall-Ads Originally uploaded by .Hessam In a flurry of discoveries on the painting of Modern Brickads I came across this from .Hessam. It again shows an intricate sign being produced and you can see the artist’s miniture design sheet perched against the wall in front of his foot. I can’t read the text but […]

Pepsi Brickad (Mumbai)
Brickads are truly a global phenomenon. Here’s one for Pepsi, probably not that old, from Mumbai in India. It’s a slightly budget effort compared to some other modern signs.

Ghost Signs Live
Browsing Frank Jump‘s blog from USA I came across this great photo by Frank of some sign writer’s (Wall Dogs in USA) putting the finishing touches to a massive brickad. This is clearly for a current business (there’s a web address featured) and is part of the revival happening across the pond. There was also […]

Shop Local
Not all Brickads are Ghost Signs and the most recent examples I know of are from artist Bob and Roberta Smith as part of his ‘Shop Local’ campaign at Peer Gallery. This involved bringing together artists and sign writers to recreate the old style of advertising on behalf of local Hoxton businesses. This photo is […]
