Blue Star
Another picture from Andrew Hughes in Lincoln. He dates this c.1960 and says that Blue Star was a national chain of garages. Also, above the brightly coloured sign, you can see the chopped remains of another older sign on the same spot.
The well preserved nature of both signs, the fact that the older one is incomplete, and the shape of the preserved area suggests that this location was concealed by a billboard which was removed recently. There are lots of examples of this happening and, although it is one way that signs are lost, it is also one of the ways that they are preserved in almost perfect condition. I’m trying to work with some of the outdoor poster site holders, as they update their print billboards for digital displays, in order to get photos of any ghost signs that might live beneath.
